Axumite Stelae Basalt
The Axumite stelae are giant, monolithic funeral markers and obelisks, the largest of which are located in the city of Axum in the Tigray Region. The material chosen for these structures was a key factor in their durability and their ability to convey the kingdom's power. Primary Rock Type: Basalt and Syenite The main rock used for the stelae is a type of dense, crystalline igneous rock, predominantly basalt and syenite. Density and Resilience: Basalt and syenite are hard, heavy, and resilient rock types. This density was essential to ensure the longevity of the towering stelae, which have endured for over two millennia, surviving both natural weathering and human interference. Source: This rock was quarried and transported from sources relatively close to Axum.
